We often speak of courage in such flat ways...I love your encouragement to be creative in the ways it manifests itself and might be expressed through each of us faithfully. Thanks for this.
I've never really thought much about courage -- at least the public kind -- until recently. Now I feel like I think about it a LOT. Let's have lunch soon!
Thank you for another lovely column. Reading this week’s update reminded me of that Good Friday service we attended 40-some years ago at NU. I don’t remember most of the church services I attended over the years, but THAT one is seared in my memory!
Wow, I don't remember that -- there have been lots of Good Fridays since. (And my mom died on Good Friday, which sort of fits, you know?) Text me the details. I'll love to remember. xoxo
Leanne, we planned our next week visit to Memphis, our town for 40 years, around Wednesday's Waffle Shop aspic and chicken salad lunch! Sunday Rev. Ryan's benediction will be "whever you go, whomever you meet, be generous, be kind, and be compassionate, for your know not what the other person is going through, only that you are called by a loving God to walk with them until you both find peace." Thank you for reminding us of Lenten lunches. Kindness, harder, it seems, these days - I agree is worth trying.
In keeping with your focus on courage, I recommend Bishop Maryann Edgar Budde's book _How We Learn to Be Brave_. I think it really speaks to the moment we are in.
Oh, great idea. I watched her in her big moment at the Cathedral, of course, but would love to have more of her gentle strength. Thanks, Patience, and I hope and your wife are well.

Love this column. It makes me think about my own Lenten observance--and how I'm facing the world at large these days-- in a different way.
I'm glad it was helpful -- figuring out how to face the world today with courage and integrity occupies a lot of my brain right now. xoxo
